Hands Off Central America!
This coming June 14-16, the United States and Mexico will be co-hosting the Central America Security and Prosperity conference in Miami where the U.S. will lay out its intentions to further militarize Mexico’s southern border and recruit the Mexican military as a regional security force. These actions not only risk destabilizing the sovereignty of Central American nations, but will also result in further human rights abuses to migrants and refugees.
CISPES has organized a campaign to “Call and then email your congressional representative today. Urge them to co-sign Rep. [Alan] Lowenthal’s letter calling on Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to make human rights, particularly the right to seek asylum, a priority at the upcoming Central America Prosperity and Security conference.”
“We need your help today to get more signers on before the deadline at 5 pm EDT. [2PM PST]
So far, the offices that have signed on to the Congressional letter are: Mike Capuano (D-MA), John Conyers (D-MI), Keith Ellison (D-MN), Dwight Evans (D-PA), Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ), Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL), Hank Johnson (D-GA), Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), Betty McCollum (D-MN), Jim McGovern (D-MA), Seth Moulton (D-MA) & Adam Smith (D-WA)”
Please follow the link below and follow the instructions to both sign the letter and call your representative. Please do so today by 5PM EST/2PM PST.
