This past Father’s Day, my mama was watching a movie on TV and delivered the following gem about the patriarch of Mexican hypermasculinity:

“That Vicente Fernández does not know how to romance a woman. He talks to her as if she were some sort of animal in the pasture so she can then get down on all fours.”

My mother, who is 82 years of age, has spent most of her life hating hypermasculinity and machismo. And while she likes Vicente’s music and likes his stage presence, she also recognizes that he personifies the type of masculinity that derives its power from the subjugation of womxn. She’s told me countless times that it is the handsome and charismatic men whom we admire most who tend to be the worst chauvinists. The charros, the revolutionaries, the intellectuals, all the same face of patriarchy.
