The Politics of Representation

So when you start to deconstruct the particular roles that people color play in The Last Jedi, you start to notice a few contradictions. Warning: SPOILERS for the film.

The fact of the matter is that the principal story The Last Jedi wanted to tell was the triangle between Rey, Kylo Ren, and Luke Skywalker. That’s the meat and potatoes. As such, the writer/director Rian Johnson didn’t really know what to do with the characters of color. And so, that’s the crux of liberal multicultural politics of representation.
