Chapulín Colorado

Chapulín Colorado

On to day four of the #InktoberLatinxColectivo2020 challenge. Today’s prompt is CHAPULÍN COLORADO. #LatinxInk20

El Chapulín Colorado, along with El Chavo del Ocho, are among Latin America’s most beloved comic characters. Most of us grew up watching their ridiculous antics on whatever Spanish channel was local to us. What younger generations or folx outside of Mexico may not know is that the creator of these characters, Roberto Gómez Bolaños aka “Chespirito,” was a conservative right-winger.

He was against a womxn’s right to choose, going so far as to lend his face to anti-abortion commercials. He also an avid supporter of the right-wing Mexican party Partido de Acción Nacional (PAN), a party that referred to emergency contraception as a “weapon of mass destruction.”

Bolaños was heavily criticized in the 1970s for visiting both Argentina and Chile as both were under the oppressive rule of military dictatorships. In fact, in 1978, when Bolaños visited Chile just five years after the coup by Augusto Pinochet that left Salvador Allende dead, Bolaños did a sold out show at the Estadio Nacional de Santiago, the same location that had been used as a political prison by Pinochet.
