Star Wars: De acuerdo a Nayib Bukele
From the moment Nayib Bukele launched his presidential campaign, he began constructing a false narrative that not only were the Salvadoran left-wing (FMLN) and right-wing (ARENA) one-and-the-same organization, but that together they had conspired to create the Salvadoran Civil War to murder Salvadorans and for their own benefit. Despite this crackpot conspiracy theory sounding like it came from the Star Wars Prequel trilogy, it is a false narrative that far too many Salvadorans have come to believe. In December 2020, at the commemoration of the El Mozote massacre, no less,, Nayib Bukele doubled down and stated that “The war [had been] a farce, they killed 75,000 from both sides, including a thousand from here in El Mozote, it was a farce, like the Peace Accords.”
Using Star Wars as an analogy, Bukele is basically saying that the Rebel Alliance and the Empire were the same and had no goal but to cause harm to the galaxy. And if you don’t like the analogy, well, too bad. Whether you want to admit it or not, the FMLN was a rebel alliance fighting against the literal empire that was the United States. The FMLN took up arms because for decades, the Salvadoran people have been subjected to exploitation, oppression, torture, disappearances, and outright genocide, not by the left-wing, but by a series of right-wing militaristic governments, aided and abetted by U.S. foreign policy. Armed struggle was the ONLY option left against fascism. If you are angry that the war lasted 12-years and cost so many lives, blame the culprit that kept it going so long, the U.S. of A, the Empire.
Nayib Bukele is basically Kylo Ren, a petulant populist promising a new order, who is disguising the fact that he’s a neo-fascist… cut from the same cloth as the Empire that preceded him.
