Tres criaturas
On July 21, 2016, the body of a young child washed up on a beach shore. The little boy, only 6 years of age, died along with another 7 year-old boy and a 10 year-old girl. They and their parents were refugees. They had been attempting to evade the authorities when their boat capsized. The parents watched in horror as their children drowned.
There was no worldwide indignation. There were no memes across social media. There was no art to honor their short lives. Hardly anyone knew it had even happened. You see, the refugees were Central American and the children had died along the southern coast of Chiapas.
The picture of the dead little boy from El Salvador, was eerily reminiscent to the one of the Syrian boy that was seen around the world. Even now, as the image of that bloodied and dusty Syrian boy is making the rounds all over social media, I can’t help but feel sadness that the refugee crisis right at our doorstep still goes largely unacknowledged. We have lots to talk about, but for now, think about these angels.
In memory of:
Erick Adrián Robles García, 6 years old, El Salvador
Carlos Daniel Aguilar, 7 years old, Honduras
Jennifer Ninet Gavarrete, 10 years old, Honduras
